"I worked with Chuck at Caterpillar in Lafayette, IN. I was a brand new engineer in 2000. I was fresh out of college and Caterpillar recruited me to come to Indiana all the way from Montana. There was lots of new faces and places, but Chuck took me under his wing until he retired. We did many trips to the shop floor to check the engine line tracking the projects we were working on. He took the time to introduce me to everyone I needed to know to do my job. He was an excellent mentor for a young engineer! Outside of work he encouraged me to get out and see Indiana. One of his treasured outdoor activities was golfing. He was determined to get me on the golf course. He got me in swing of things after a few trips to the driving range and had me on the fairway along side of him in no time. Chuck was a great guy, and I glad to see he was enjoying retirement with his family and friends in warm sunny Florida! May he rest in peace."-Shelby Whitmer
"I worked closely with Chuck while we started up and then operated the Caterpillar factory in Lafayette, IN. He was an outstanding technician, engineer, and supervisor, and often provided valuable help and advise to me. More importantly, he was a good friend. My sympathy to Liz, whom I miss at the credit union, and the to rest of the family. " - Mark Phililips

"I have chills and my heart is deeply saddened by this news. I’m so sorry for the loss of a your precious dad. It is with deep gratitude that I say I had wonderful people in my life that I could model after and as they pass we are reminded of the profound imprint they leave. I’m glad you are all together as you mourn and honor him.  Please know you will be in my prayers during this difficult time. Also thank you for reaching out. I may have missed the news if you posted on Facebook. It is good to know this now as I can focus on these fragile days and wrapping you in thought.  Much love to you all." - Carol Bonner O'Toole

"I worked with Chuck when he was an IBM Customer Engineer (CE) for Fairfield. Very knowledgeable and a great guy. I also had the opportunity to work closely with his wife, Liz, when she worked for Industrial Federal Credit Union (IFCU) in setting up Fairfield’s Payroll Direct Deposit System. She was very personable and a great gal to work with. Very sorry to learn of Chuck's passing."

"So one of my “Dad” stories is dismantling a certain waterbed in Miami (Lakes by the Bay) while making and drinking ice cream drinks (loaded of course!). Also, how much he loved you. His eyes twinkled when he looked at you"
- Laurie 'Casper' Jackson

I hope you are doing well. Just read your father's obituary. I am sorry for this loss. Truly enjoyed reading about his life. It read like a true servant leader.
Please extend our condolences to the rest of your family and our gratitude for considering the Lafayette Catholic School System as one of the honor memorials. We will inform your mother of anyone who makes a contribution in his honor.
Blessings,

Liz and Family,  Our deepest sympathy our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Jerry often talks about Chuck and how he should have gone to CAT with him.    Sincerely, Gayle and Jerry Biggs

"I'm sorry for your loss.  I served in the 1st Mob (AF Mobile Combat Communications Group) from 1967-1969.  WHile in the "'Mob' I also went to Korea during the Pueblo incident.  I believe I may have known Chuck during these years, but we were traveling and moving frequently throughout the war zone, so I am not certain.  I had no idea that a fellow, "Mobster" lived in this area.  Rest in Peace." ~Jim Brown

My Husband, Chuck
Charles Edward Whitney was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 12, 1944 to Lena Diane Whitney (Griffin) and Robert Edwards Whitney.  Charles had two older brothers, Robert and Merle.  Charles was the youngest of the three Whitney boys.  He was born on Columbus Day and his parents’ wedding anniversary.  As a child, Chuck always declared Columbus Day was a holiday because it was his birthday—not because it was Columbus Day.  Yes, Chuck had a sense of humor at a very young age!
Growing up, Chuck lived in Indianapolis on Jefferson Street, near Tenth Street and enjoyed the friendship of the “guys in the neighborhood”.  Chuck remained friends with those “guys”, particularly Mervin Francis Winters Junior, (Merv), his best friend since he was four years old.  They remained friends throughout their lives and shared many good times, travels, hunting, fishing, golfing, trackball, poker, card games, boating, swimming and competing at everything they did. Trips to Princess Lake, where his maternal grandparents lived were a memory Chuck loved.  He was a swimmer and somewhat of a daredevil at that lake, remembering his times with his Mother and friends in a beautiful, peaceful setting, away from the big town of Indianapolis.

Chuck attended elementary school at Indianapolis Public School 15.  After 6th grade, Chuck attended Indianapolis Arsenal Technical School where he was in honors classes, was on the baseball and wrestling teams.   Chuck played baseball on teams at Brookside Park and spent many hours at Riverside Park.  Lena, Chuck’s mother, was a mom who never missed Chuck’s games or matches.  She was his number one fan and remained his number one fan until her death.   She was proud of her sons and was a hard working, attentive mother.   Chuck’s father was a World War I veteran and was in other conflicts during his U. S. Army career.  He was a railroad engineer and later became a Yellow Cab driver in Indianapolis.  Chuck’s love of country ran deep within him.

When asked of his heritage, Chuck would tell people he was Kentuckian.  But, in reality Chuck was 87% English and the other 13% was Irish and Scottish.  He was not Kentuckian (which Hoosiers hate to be called).  People from Indiana are proud to be “Hoosiers”.   He was a wonderful, hard-working, person, always ready for a joke, teasing, and up for a prank or any type of competition. He loved to have fun and usually made any task fun, no matter how dirty or difficult, Chuck loved to have fun.
